The main features of the proposed experiment layout are:
- a heavy ion beam on a heavy target which provides favorable conditions
for the H0 formation both due to coalescence of two Lambda
particles (owing to the large Lambda production cross section) and
via direct production from possible formation of a quark-gluon plasma.
- a strong (5Tm) dipole magnet
to sweep away beam, beam fragments and most of the produced baryons and mesons
- a low mass
distributed drift chamber operating in
a moderate magnetic field, to identify the weak decay of the H0 and
neutral hyperons, while maintaining a low efficiency for gamma's and
neutrons
- a small array of
silicon drift detectors
placed very near the target on the negative rigidity side of the beam for
detecting very short-lived H0s, hyperons and anti-baryons
- a scintillator hodoscope neutron detector
to provide detection of the neutron from the decay of the daughter
Sigma-minus produced in the predcited weak decay channel of the
H0
- a scintillator TOF wall to provide a fast
trigger which will enhance the sample of events containing the most interesting
topologies
